Superman 209-023 Shot Breakdown

I’ve had a few people ask me to post some sort of breakdown of one of the shots that i’ve worked on for Superman. This is a full CG shot with a bunch of elements… CG water, boat, missle, smoke etc… Here’s a link to the shot, and the flow that put it together. I borrowed this idea from Aruna’s blog, so I hope he doesn’t mind :) This shot was a bit of a nightmare, because it was completely noodled to death. The lighting on the boat changed so many times, and the look of the water went through many revisions. The CG boat was given to me in a variety of passes, so it could be adjusted in the comp. The color grade that they applied to the whole sequence makes it look pretty crappy, and our originals looked much better IMO, but what can you do? If there’s any questions, feel free to ask in the comments! Thanks! :)

I am very thankful for compositors like yourself posting these node tree images on blogs or in forums, but it would be really great to have some more detail about the handling of a shot or portion of a shot. For instance, there are so many nodes for just the boat. What is really going on in there? I can understand if there is proprietary info or whatever you can’t talk about or show, but if there is any more detail you can give, there are people out here for whom it is not mundane information.

I wish I could show the timelapse quicktime of this shot. Maybe I’ll ask my supervisor if it’s ok to post it on my site, but I somehow doubt that’ll make it out. The boat on this shot was one of the most nitpicked elements on all of my shots. The comments were always “the boat doenst’ look real”. Myself and the supervisor for this project went through at least 100 iterations of the boat it’s self with different lighing, shading, coloring, etc… untill we randomly hit one that Stetson liked. It was really frustrating.

There wasn’t many passes to do with the boat… A diffuse, spec, AO, railing spec, pool spec, helicopter rotor blade spec, helicopter tiedowns, boat shadow, and water reflection were all of them I think. Some of the nodes in there are repairing bad 3D since there was errors in the camera projection, and there was some doubling up the texture that had to be fixed in 2D. The rest of the nodes are CC”s to specific areas of the boat, like the deck, the back, the people standing on the boat, etc. Ther’es some glows on there in specific areas which accounts for a few tools.

I hope this is what you’re looking for. If there’s any other info you want, just let me know.
